After a long, wet winter, most lawns need a bit of attention to bounce back. Put the groundwork in early and you'll be rewarded with a thick, healthy lawn that stays looking great right through summer.
Start with a tidy-up
Clear away any leaves, twigs and debris that have gathered over winter. This lets light and air reach the grass and stops damp patches and moss from taking hold.
Scarify and aerate
Raking out the build-up of dead moss and thatch — known as scarifying — makes a huge difference. Aerating the soil afterwards helps water, air and nutrients get down to the roots, which is the foundation of a strong lawn.
Feed and treat
A spring feed gives the grass the nutrients it needs to grow thick and green, while the right treatment keeps weeds and moss in check before they get established.
Mow little and often
- Start with a high cut and lower the blades gradually
- Never remove more than a third of the height in one go
- Keep your mower blades sharp for a clean finish
- Mow more frequently as growth picks up through spring
