A mature tree is one of the most valuable features a garden can have, but a neglected or unhealthy tree can become a real hazard. The good news is that trees almost always show signs of trouble before anything serious happens. Here are five to watch for.
1. Dead or hanging branches
Deadwood and branches that hang awkwardly can fall without warning, especially in high winds. If you can see bare, brittle limbs with no leaves in summer, it's worth having them removed safely.
2. Leaning or shifting
A tree that has started to lean noticeably, or where the soil is lifting around the base, may have a compromised root system. A sudden lean after a storm should always be checked promptly.
3. Cracks, cavities and fungus
Splits in the trunk, hollow cavities and brackets of fungus growing on the bark can all point to internal decay. These aren't always fatal, but they need an expert eye to assess.
4. Thinning canopy or early leaf drop
If the canopy is looking sparse, or leaves are dropping much earlier than the surrounding trees, it can be a sign of stress or disease that's worth investigating.
5. Branches near buildings or power lines
Growth that's touching your roof, blocking light or heading towards overhead lines should be managed before it causes damage. Regular pruning keeps trees safe and well-shaped.
